The area of Cartagena and it´s countryside have a strategically important communications network, including a modern road and motorway network which carries the large volume of traffic generated by the activity around the port, and is an important hub for communications between Valencia and Andalucía.
The Port of Cartagena is the most important in the Region of Murcia, due not only to its strategic position amidst the international trade of the Mediterranean Arc, but also to the high volume of cargo and passengers passing through it (Cartagena is among the ten busiest ports in the Mediterranean) and the fact that it is an important base for the Spanish Navy.
There is also a rail station, and the high-speed line is due to reach the city in the near future.
